Bias List(s)
The bias list allows the candidate to “provide in writing names of persons (within and outside UCLA) who, in the view of the candidate, for reasons set forth might not objectively evaluate the candidate’s qualifications or performance” (The CALL, Appendix 1, Section VI). It is the candidate’s opinion that the persons named may be influenced by personal feelings or opinions and may not likely convey facts.
Bias List (External) – May be viewed by the departmental faculty.
Bias List (Internal) – May only be viewed by the Department Chair (unless the Chair is on the bias list). Internal bias list is confidential and should only be included in the dossier when submitting to the Dean’s Office.
When to consider the bias list(s):
- Prior to soliciting any letters (external, internal, peer, etc.)
- Prior to appointing an ad hoc committee
- Follow departmental practice when a member of the standing committee is listed on the bias list (but never disclose said committee member is on a bias list of a particular faculty – please confer with our office).
- Prior to finalizing the List of Review Committee (RC) Nominations
Notes:
- If the Department Chair is on the bias list, contact your Divisional AP Analyst, as the Dean may appoint a proxy Department Chair for the review.
- All voting faculty have the right to vote on actions. Therefore, a faculty member/committee member on the bias list must not be asked to recuse themselves from the dossier review process and vote.
