Ralph Shapiro, a revered UCLA alumnus, philanthropist and business leader died Aug. 14 at 92, leaving an indelible mark on the university’s past, present and future. His remarkable journey from Boyle Heights by way of Lithuania to becoming a respected business leader and one of the university’s most steadfast supporters for over five decades exemplifies his unwavering commitment to education and community.

Shapiro’s deep connection to UCLA began with his bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1953, followed by a juris doctorate in 1958. Together with his wife, Shirley, whom he met while the two were studying at UCLA in 1956, the Shapiros’ generosity extends across the university, impacting athletics, the arts, law, music, dentistry, health and nursing. Their legacy of giving is a remarkable one; in just half a century, the Shapiros gave more than 1,600 gifts — twice as many as any other family at UCLA.

The couple’s philanthropy went beyond financial support; it was about creating opportunities and nurturing excellence. They endowed over 20 faculty chairs in various disciplines — from piano performance to pediatrics — and provided scholarships to more than 700 students. They also served on more than 30 boards and committees, with Shapiro taking on volunteer leadership positions at the UCLA School of Law and The UCLA Foundation, as well as with Campaign UCLA and the Centennial Campaign.

In 2019, Ralph and Shirley Shapiro were honored with the UCLA Medal, the university’s highest accolade, recognizing their extraordinary contributions and unwavering dedication to UCLA’s mission. The Shapiro Fountain on Royce quad and the Shapiro Courtyard adjacent to the law school were both named in recognition of the couple’s prolific giving.

Ralph Shapiro’s legacy is one of profound impact and inspiration. His contributions have not only shaped the present but will continue to influence UCLA’s future, ensuring it remains a leader in higher education. As we honor Ralph’s memory, we celebrate a life devoted to giving back and making a difference. His spirit will live on in the halls of UCLA and in the hearts of all who are touched by the enduring ripple effects of his generosity and vision.
