Adjunct Professor Series and Professor-in-Residence Series
Adjunct Professor titles, per APM
280 “are assigned to academically qualified research or other creative
personnel who contribute significantly to teaching either in formal courses
or in guidance of graduate students.” Qualified individuals drawn
from professional practice also can be appointed as Adjunct Professors.
All positions within the series, Assistant Adjunct Professors (Steps I-IV),
Associate Adjunct Professors (Steps I-III), and Adjunct Professor (Steps
I-IX, and Above-Scale), are untenured.
Professor-in-Residence titles, per APM
270, “are assigned to academically qualified research or other creative
personnel who engage in teaching, research, and University service to the
same extent as those holding the corresponding titles in the professorial
series in the same department.” All positions within the series, Assistant
Professor-in-Residence (Steps I-IV), Associate Professor-in-Residence (Steps
I-III), and Professor-in-Residence (Steps I-IX, and Above-Scale), are untenured.
- Search Procedures
Recruitment searches for both series must be conducted to select the best
qualified person for the positions advertised. Please see The CALL for
guidelines on recruitment (Appendix
22) and faculty searches and exceptions (waivers) to searches (Appendix
23).
- Salaries
Salaries for the Adjunct and In-Residence series at all ranks and steps
must be taken from the Faculty--Ladder
Ranks Series—Academic Year salary tables. These salaries
are subject to all range adjustments. Titles in both series may
have off-scale salaries. Titles in both series may hold without
salary appointments.
- Funding
The Adjunct and In-Residence series at all ranks and steps are restricted
to eight (8) years of State funding (19900 funds) at 51% time or greater.
Appointments in both series at 50% or less time have no yearly limit on
State funding.
- Submitting the Action
Personnel actions for the Adjunct and In-Residence series are almost identical
to the procedures established for the Professor Series.
- Appointments. For Assistant Adjunct Professors and Assistant

- Renewal of appointment. All appointments in the Adjunct and
In-Residence series are from year-to-year and must have a specified
ending date (7/1-6/30). Renewals of appointment without a change
in step and salary do not require a dossier and should be prepared
on the Approval Form for Temporary Faculty.
